Written English: different purposes, different styles. General Outline.

Subject: Written English: different purposes, different styles.
English Level: Low-intermediate, intermediate
Context: This is a workshop created for students of Bachillerato to improve their writing skills in two different contexts. On the hand, they will work on writing spontaneous opinions, on the other on narrating stories.
Goals of the course:
1. Language
At the end of the course students will have practiced
• expression of opinions in English
• reading of different fiction texts.
• reading and writing opinions.
• writing different kinds of paragraphs
• listening to authentic videos and recordings related to the content
• speaking about the course-related content
2. Content
At the end of the course students will have dealt with:
• Connectors
• Tips on writing
• Different types of texts in English
3. Study Skills
Students will have the opportunity to
• use the web to improve their writing skills
• develop their own writing creativity

Written English: different purposes, different styles. Activities.

Day 1

- Review the most usual conjunctions in English and take the quiz here
- Have a look at the basic paragraph structure here.
- In groups of four read the following article on Essay Writing Tips and decide which feature is the most important when writing an essay.

Day 2

- Have a look at this pdf document with helpful expressions to write opinions. Choose the three of them you find most useful.

- Visit this blog and express your opinion on any of the topics proposed using at least two of the expressions in the document you have just read.

Day 3

- What is flash fiction? Look for the definition in the wikipedia and write it down.

- Have a look at this page on flash fiction and choose a story you like. If you prefer, you can also listen to stories with these podcasts

Day 4

- Write a summary and an opinion on the story you have chosen. Try to respect the basic paragraph structure you learned on day 1. In groups of four, read your summaries and opinons to your partners and comment them.

Day 5

- Write your own piece of fiction and publish it in this wiki. Remember that your story must not be longer than 75 words.
- Read at least four of your partners' stories and leave a comment.
